Caring for curly and Afro hair through a Manchester winter

Cold air outside, central heating inside and rain in between: winter asks a lot of textured hair. A few changes to your routine keep curls soft, defined and comfortable until spring.

Moisture comes first

Curly and coily hair is naturally drier, because the scalp's oils struggle to travel down each bend of the strand. Heating draws out even more moisture, so winter is the time to add a weekly deep conditioning treatment and to layer a leave-in conditioner under your styler.

Wash gently, and a little less often

Harsh shampoo strips the oils curls depend on. Choose a gentle, sulphate-free cleanser, focus it on the scalp and let it rinse through the lengths. Many of our clients find washing less often in winter keeps curls softer.

Protect against the weather

Damp air brings frizz, cold wind brings breakage. Satin or silk-lined hats and scarves cause far less friction than wool, and a satin pillowcase or bonnet at night keeps curls defined for longer between wash days.

Go easy on heat

Diffusing on a low temperature, or letting curls dry naturally indoors, protects their pattern. When you do use heat, use a heat protector every time.

Keep up with trims

Dry ends catch and tangle, and splits travel. Our curly cut was developed in Brazil: we shape the hair curl by curl, so it sits the way it naturally wants to, then finish with hydration and definition. A trim before the coldest months sets your curls up well.
